Dr. David Bernstein

Dr. Bernstein is the Senior Forensic Psychologist and President of Forensic Consultants, LLC. He has held appointments at Yale University School of Medicine, where he completed his doctoral internship, and Harvard University Medical School, where he completed his postdoctoral residency in Forensic Psychology in the Department of Law and Psychiatry. He has been a consultant for federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies on cases ranging from bomb threats and organized crime, to homicide, and has done training workshops nationally for law enforcement agencies including the FBI’s National Training Academy. Dr. Bernstein has been embedded in the field with law enforcement during operations when his assistance was seen as being useful on-site.

He has spoken nationally and internationally on the subject of Threat Assessment and the impact that peer victimization has on Targeted School Violence.  In 2013, Dr. Bernstein was asked to speak before the Connecticut State Senate’s Subcommittee on School Safety to provide information and guidance to legislators regarding school safety and student threat assessments. He has provided training lectures for the Indiana School Safety Specialist Academy (in cooperation with the Indiana FBI), the Nevada Statewide School Safety Summit (with the Nevada Department of Emergency Management), the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, (NEMLEC) and NEMLEC’s School Threat Assessment and Response System project (STARS). In 2016 he was the keynote speaker for the American Academy of Pediatrics “Critical Issues in School Health” conference, and presented at New York City’s first “Preventing Violence on College Campuses” conference hosted by Columbia University. Last year he was a Keynote Speaker for the State of New Jersey Department of Education’s (Office of School Preparedness and Emergency Planning) “Train The Trainer” workshop on school violence.

He has appeared or consulted on Dateline NBC, Good Morning America, ABC News, NBC News, The Travel Channel’s “Hidden City,” National Public Radio’s “This American Life,” Aljazeera America, and New York City’s News12. Dr. Bernstein has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Huffington Post, the Associated Press, Hartford Current, Boston Globe, Connecticut Law Tribune, Connecticut Law Journal, Toronto Star, and Psychology Today.

Dr. Bernstein is the recipient of the 2014 Connecticut Psychological AssociationsPresident’s Awardand is the former President (2012-2014) of the Connecticut Psychological Association’s Forensic Division.  He is on the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Forensic Science & Pathology – (IJFP), and is the former vice president of the Northeast Chapter of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP). He was named one of the best legal consultants in the Connecticut Law Tribune’s 2016 “Best of” issue.
